The Faculty of Health Sciences prepares graduates to protect and improve human health, whether at the bedside of an individual patient or across the population of a community. Its programs combine a rigorous foundation in the biological and behavioral sciences with supervised practice, and they place sustained emphasis on evidence-based practice, ethics, and the safety and dignity of those whom health professionals serve. The Faculty comprises two departments: the Department of Nursing and the Department of Public Health. Because health programs prepare students for practice that bears directly on human wellbeing, they carry requirements that the other faculties do not, including supervised clinical or field placement, health screening, and, in the case of nursing, alignment with professional registration. The Faculty designs its degrees so that graduates are competent, safe, and ready to meet the registration and practice expectations of the jurisdictions in which they will work. All programs incorporate substantial supervised practice alongside academic study, and they culminate in a research or capstone component that requires students to apply evidence to authentic problems of health and care. The Faculty maintains close relationships with hospitals, clinics, and public health agencies to ensure that placement experience is current and well supervised.
